5 Reasons to Take The Kids to Your Local Library This Summer

I’m a book nerd through and through. I have ALWAYS enjoyed nothing more than losing myself in a good story. In an effort to pass this passion along to my kids I have heavily depended on our local library. There are so many benefits to having access to a place like this. But I won’t bore you with my fangirling! Instead, I’ll give you five great reasons to load the kids up and head to your local library this summer.

Five Reasons to Take The Kids to Your Local Library This Summer

1. Books!!

Stop reading the same thing OVER and OVER again at bedtime. Pick out five or six books to get you through the week! Not only will it open your kid’s mind to new types of books and levels of reading, but it will also keep you sane. I don’t know about you, but if I have to read Brown Bear, Brown Bear one more time I’m going to lose it.

2. They offer mommy and me classes.

Most local libraries offer classes for various age groups (lap time for 0-12 months, toddler time for 24-36 mo, preschool story time 3-5. You may even be able to find some after-school ones for the older kids). The songs and the games are cheesy, yes. But your little ones will think it’s a party and love you for it.

3. It gives both you AND your little one(s) a chance to socialize.

I was going insane after I had my son. I felt so cooped up in our apartment, and I needed human contact with people my age. So I started taking my son to the mommy and me classes. Not only did it give him valuable social skills to be around all of those other kids, but it gave me a chance to put real pants on and stop the baby talk for an hour or two.

4. They have special events.

From themed events like Harry Potter night to educational events like SPLAT (science play language art and technology), there should be plenty of chances to mix things up for the whole family throughout the summer.

5. It’s FREE!

Keeping the kids busy throughout the summer can not only become daunting but it can be downright EXPENSIVE. It’s so nice to have options like this where the whole family can benefit. Rain or shine, the library is a fairly dependable reason to get out of the house for a bit. And it’s FREE entertainment!

What Are You Waiting For?

At the risk of sounding like a PBS commercial … get out there and check out your local library. Check out the classes or maybe even come up with a fun reading challenge for the kids. Set a reading goal, and when they reach it, take them for ice cream. Or get those babies into the classes for some fun singalongs!

Take advantage of what your local library has to offer, and —  at the very least — you can enjoy the quiet of the library’s whisper policy!
