This is an easy, delicious recipe for homemade bread! Even if you’re a newbie to baking bread (like I was), you can make this!
Ingredients:
2 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
1/2 Tbsp + 1/4 c sugar, divided
2 c warm water (105-110 F)
1/4 c + 2 Tbsp melted butter, divided
1/2 c buttermilk
1 Tbsp Kosher salt
6-7 c all-purpose flour
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, combine the yeast and 1/2 Tbsp sugar.
- Pour the water into the bowl, and gently stir to combine.
- Let the yeast mixture sit 5-10 minutes, until foamy. (If it doesn’t foam, start over.)
- In a large mixer bowl, combine 1/4 c sugar, 1/4 c butter, buttermilk, and salt and mix.
Add yeast mixture to large bowl and mix until just combined. - Using a dough hook on low, mix in 3 c flour.
- Add 1 more cup flour at a time and continue mixing on low.
- Add 1/2 c flour at a time until dough stops sticking to the sides of the bowl.(You can knead it by hand, if you prefer.)
- Cover the dough ball and inside of bowl with 1 Tbsp butter.
- Cover the bowl with a warm towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Gently punch down dough and transfer it to a floured surface.
- Knead the dough by hand 2-3 minutes, then cut into 2 equal pieces.
- Using a rolling pin, roll each piece into a rectangle.
- Starting at the shorter side, roll each piece of dough and tuck the ends under.
- Grease 2 9×5″ loaf pans, and place dough rolls in them, seam-side down.
- While preheating the oven to 375, let the loaves rise 30 more minutes.
- Bake loaves on middle rack for 25-30 min.
- Remove from oven and brush tops with butter.
- Remove from pans and let them cool on a baking rack.
